Nick Swisher joins Cleveland Indians in $56M four year contract
The Cleveland Indians are bringing Nick Swisher back to Ohio, where he is from.Nick Swisher will get $56M for his four year contract, adding the stability he wanted so badly.
The free agent outfielder had a big pitch from the Indians last weak and had been pursued for weeks, decided to join them on Sunday 23rd December. Although a physical is required, they have agreed on the deal. It’s believed it will be announced officially sometime after Christmas.
Nick Swisher took to Twitter to say “Wow! What a crazy few weeks. Hey Cleveland! Are you ready? Because I’m coming home!” Swisher said on Twitter. The veteran,32, spent four seasons with the New York Yankees and the switch hitter got 24 home-runs last season, an amount that would of led the Indians last season.
The Indians were desperately seeking a replacement for Shin-Soo Choo, who they recently traded to the Cincinnati Reds have found the man they wanted and pursued for so long. The Indians have had a weaker outfield over the years but now it will consist of Drew Stubbs, Michael Brantley and Nick Swisher. Between this trio the Tribe have everything a team wants and needs in an outfield.
It’s been an impressive start to life as manager of the Indians for Terry Francona, who helped the Indians beat out Seattle, Texas and Boston in order to sign their man. It’s believed that the Indians playing on Swisher’s Buckeyes ties, were able to convince him and his wife that this was the place for him. He was pitched reasons as to why he should join the Tribe via video and in person from Ohio State sports coaches.
Chris Antonetti has done well this off season as he has grabbed many new players for Cleveland, noticeably Bauer, Reynolds, Aviles, Stubbs and Swisher. With all of these new players the Indians appear to of addressed most of their weaknesses from last season. Although the Indians will not be dreaming of a World Series win, they’re definitely building in the right manner and have an outside chance of grabbing a playoff place.
Swisher has had many poor playoff appearances for the Yankees, but this shouldn’t be a problem for the Tribe as they’re simply hoping to get there in the next few years. So there’s no pressure like there was in New York. Swisher is heading home and the Tribe are very happy to get their dream signing in the building.
